Step 2: Traverse ownership edges. The query follows all ownership edges from the target entity to its shareholders, and from those shareholders to their shareholders, to a configurable depth. At each node, the query checks whether the entity appears on the OFAC SDN list, the EU Consolidated List, the UK Sanctions List, or other designated sanctions lists indexed in the WorldGraph.

Step 3: Apply the 50 Percent Rule. For each ownership path that reaches a sanctioned entity, the query calculates the aggregate ownership percentage. If one or more sanctioned entities collectively own 50% or more of an intermediate entity, that entity is flagged as blocked. The blocked status propagates downstream: any entity majority-owned by a blocked entity is itself blocked.

Step 4: Traverse commercial edges. Beyond ownership, the query follows supplier, customer, and counterparty edges to identify commercial relationships with sanctioned or blocked entities. This is the difference between screening and tracing. Screening asks: "Is this name on a list?" Tracing asks: "Is this entity connected—through any path, at any depth—to an entity on a list?"
